Savin’ You Money Monday: the Glossier Dupe

Note: this post is not sponsored by any brand and all ideas/opinions are my own.

SO, GUYS, I think I’m going to start a new blog-series… thingy. I’m thinking maybe a couple Mondays per month, I’ll write about products (clothing, skincare, makeup etc) that I’m loving: two products that are exactly the same, at very different price points.

The idea came to me yesterday evening IN A DREAM, jk. It was when I was washing my face before bed. I was choosing which one of my 100 000 serums to apply and I noticed that my two very expensive glossier serums are LITERALLY EXACTLY THE SAME as two other serums that I own by the brand ‘The Ordinary’ from Deciem. The self-proclaimed “Abnormal Beauty Company”, which happens to make everything in Toronto (and also like 5 minutes from my apartment), creates skincare and haircare with good-for-you ingredients. I own a bunch of their products (primer, serums, face masks, cleansing conditioners etc), and I love em all. So I was initially happy but then immediately annoyed that I had spent $74 on Glossier products when I had the same thing sitting on my counter- for $6.

Turns out, Glossier’s ‘Super Bounce’ serum is just Hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5 which you can discover just by reading their website for like 0.4 seconds which apparently I was too lazy to do. I was blinded by everything being cute and pink (but like… EVERYTHING IS SO CUTE AND PINK.) Deciem’s ‘The Ordinary’ brand has a serum DOUBLE THE SIZE that’s simply called ‘Hyaluronic acid 2% + b5’. How refreshingly straight to the point. Also- take a look at the zip code of the two New York addresses on the bottle. (The combo of hyaluronic acid and b5 is supposed to help with dry skin, by the way. I’ve definitely found that by using both of these serums, my skin is much more pLuMp and less flakey.)

Glossier’s ‘Super Pure’ serum is meant for red, blemish-y skin. It’s supposed to make your face chill the eff out and get it’s shit together. It’s a mix of Niacinamide and Zinc, which also happens to be the contents of another Deciem ‘The Ordinary’ serum, aptly named ‘Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%”.

To break this down for you: Glossier doesn’t ship to Canada, so Canadians either need to use an expensive third party shipping service or beg one of their American friends to ship it across the border (I have done both). If you’re American, WELL LUCKY YOU, and also I’m really sorry that Donald Trump is your president. But anyway. The Glossier serums are 15ml and the Deciem ones are 30ml. You’re therefore paying $56 US ($74 Canadian) for the same amount of product that you can buy from Deciem for FOUR DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS ($5.90 Canadian). I’m really shit at math but I know that is a CRAZY markup. I LOVE Glossier, but I think they charge this much because their bottles are pink, they have a crazy cute #aesthetic, and they send rainbow and happy face stickers with your order. And people (me) will eat it up.

Don’t get me wrong- I’m a fan of Glossier products. Their Boy Brow and their Mega Greens Mask are two of the best products I’ve ever used. HowEVER, there’s really no debating that their serums are hugely overpriced compared to Deciem’s brand, which I find work just as well.

Have you tried either of these products? Let me know what you think of them or if there’s anything else you’d like me to test/compare/review. UNTIL NEXT TIME, keep fit and have fun. Sorry. A little Canadian 90’s nostalgia.
